Its a bit Crochety!!

Hey folks! Let’s see its see 5 in the morning and guess what? I am working for college…  Well guess what college suddenly become interesting. We got an assignment and…

The assignment began with selecting a theme from any one of the listed categories:

  1. Indian / International Craft
  2. Folk art
  3. Tribal art
  4. Design movement
  5. Bio mimicry

The theme which I selected was CRAFT. And the three topics from this category which came into my mind were:

  1. Papier Mache: a substance made of pulped paper or paper pulp mixed with glue and other materials or of layers of paper glued and pressed together, moulded when moist to form various articles and becoming hard and strong when dry. Papier mache actually originates from China; the inventors of paper itself.
  1. Sanjhi Art: Sanjhi Art from Mathura, is a truly unique craft form that features exquisite designs and intricate picture motifs, cut into paper. Craftsmen use specially designed scissors to accomplish this process. Sanjhi art is the traditional art of stencilling from Mathura, Krishna’s hometown. Known for its inherent spiritual implications that reach beyond immediate aesthetic appeal, it is considered to be one of the finest arts of spiritual expression.
  1. Crochet: Crochet is a process of creating fabric by interlocking loops of yarn, thread, or strands of other materials using a crochet hook. The name is derived from the French term “crochet”, meaning small hook. These are made of materials such as metal, wood, or plastic and are manufactured commercially and produced in artisan workshops. The salient difference between crochet and knitting, beyond the implements used for their production, is that each stitch in crochet is completed before proceeding with the next one, while knitting keeps a large number of stitches open at a time. (Variant forms such as Tunisian crochet and broomstick lace keep multiple crochet stitches open at a time.)

Why crochet?

Crocheting demands attention from both of your brains hemispheres. Much like the job description of a managerial position, you need creative ideas and quick problem solving skills when you are working on a project with crocheting and working on this project will make my mind explore more.

Why not sanjhi art or papier mache?

Since sanjhi art and papier mache both of the crafts are done with paper mostly and I wanted to explore my chosen craft with threads as we were already exploring thread in the college.
